Andy Barth
Former Newscaster, WMAR TV
Andy Barth (Andrew C.) was born and raised in Washington, DC, and is the product of its then-rigorous public schools. (Latin was required!)
He graduated from Johns Hopkins University (BA in Political Science) in 1968 and went to work for the Minneapolis Tribune as a police and general assignment reporter, also writing feature stories on grain futures, Native Americans, harsh weather, and other local culture.
In 1970, Andy joined WMAR-TV Ch 2 in Baltimore – a tenure that would span 35 years. He covered every aspect of local news in a blue collar/blue blooded American City–floods, fires, features, the Baltimore Symphony and found it was more rewarding to focus on people being good rather than being bad. He discovered that bad news isn’t the only thing that sells and produced feature franchises called “Andy At Large” and “How Do They Do That?”
He “retired” in 2006 to run for Congress, but lost. Since then he has taught Broadcast Journalism at the University of Southern Mississippi, served as Director of Public Information for the Howard County (MD) Health Department, and been Press Secretary for two public officials whose political party affiliation was different from his own. Most recently, Andy was spokesperson for the County Executive of Howard County, MD.
Retired again, Andy now works as a free-lance editor of books and articles and a political strategist.
He is an avid gardener, and Andy his wife watch nightly network newscasts believing they are the last, best hope for finding non-partisan, impartial, fact-based news on TV.
