J. Raymond DePaulo, Jr., M.D. is a University Distinguished Service Professor and Co-Director of the Johns Hopkins Mood Disorders Center in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He has been an active clinician, teacher, researcher throughout his 40+ years on the Johns Hopkins faculty.
Dr. DePaulo founded the original Affective Disorders Clinic at Johns Hopkins in 1977. It is now called the Johns Hopkins Mood Disorders Center which Dr. DePaulo and Dr. Kay Jamison co-lead. The Center tackles mood disorders on three fronts by providing the finest clinical care, leading expert science and championing awareness about depression & bipolar disorders nationally and worldwide.
Dr. DePaulo was the Henry Phipps Professor and Director of the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Hopkins School of Medicine and Psychiatrist-in-Chief at the Johns Hopkins Hospital from 2002 through 2016.
Dr. DePaulo is a Castle Connolly Top Doctor for 2022 and has been identified as a top doctor for 31 consecutive years, for every year since the program’s inception in 1991.
His research interests focus on clinical assessment, diagnosis, causes and treatments for mood disorders. His research group led several early genetic studies of bipolar disorder and unipolar depression. He has authored over 140 peer reviewed scientific articles. He has mentored outstanding clinician scientists (notably Francis McMahon, Chief of the Genetics Branch of NIMH, James Potash Professor and Chair of Psychiatry at Iowa, and Melvin McInnis, Upjohn-Woodworth Professor of Psychiatry at Michigan). He worked with Dr. Karen Swartz who leads the ADAP, which is a program of education on a model curriculum on depression for high schools. He has partnered with Dr. Kay Jamison in research, education and advocacy efforts for patients and families. Dr. DePaulo served three two-year terms as Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the National Network of Depression Centers and is now ex officio member of the NNDC Executive Committee.
Dr. DePaulo has served on several foundation boards of directors and scientific advisory boards related to mood disorders. Dr. DePaulo has authored 2 books on depressive illnesses for patients and families (Understanding Depression and How to Cope with Depression). He has won a number of national awards for clinical leadership, for teaching, and for research in depression and Bipolar Disorder. He has twice been named a forum fellow at the World Economic Forum held annually in Davos, Switzerland. He is the 2016 recipient of the Ming Tsuang Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society of Psychiatric Genetics.
